Light rain is expected in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra over the weekend, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. On Friday, the city and suburban areas experienced pleasant weather coupled with showers.

The maximum temperature recorded at the Santacruz observatory was 35.5 degrees. Officials said temperatures may surge in the next two days.

“On Saturday, there is a possibility of light drizzle. The maximum temperature is likely to touch 37 degrees. There is a trough that has developed and is running across Marathawada due to which there is also the presence of easterlies (winds blowing from the east). However, from Sunday onwards, there could be a change in flow pattern, which may again result in mercury dipping by a few notches,” said Sushma Nair, a scientist from IMD, Mumbai.

On Friday, areas like Dahisar, Kandivali, and Malad in the western suburbs, and areas like Parel and Worli in the island city experienced a light spell of showers.

The intensity of rain, however, was low and didn’t reach the measurable limit, officials said.

Interior parts of Maharashtra, meanwhile, like Kolhapur, Satara, and Ahmednagar may face an intense spell of rain, as per the IMD. “The interior parts are facing an unstable weather-like phenomenon. Parts like Kolhapur and Satara experienced hailstorms, while they were recording higher day temperatures. This pattern may continue during the weekend,” Nair said.

Meanwhile, the IMD’s coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 32.2 degrees. The minimum temperatures recorded in Santacruz and Colaba on Friday were 24.6 and 24.8 degrees respectively.
