Top junior Vrishab Kotian of Tamil Nadu shocked second seed and India No. 5 Gaurav Nandrajog to storm into the men’s semi-finals,in the 1st NSCI Open Squash Championship 011 at the National Sports Club of India,Worli on Wednesday.

India No. 2 in the under-19 category,Kotian caused the biggest upset of the competition so far with an impressive 11-6,11-8,4-11,11-9 win. Kotian surprised the favourite with a 2-0 advantage early on. But Nandrajog utilised his experience to snatch the third set to keep the match alive. The crucial fourth was a tight contest until Kotian held on and smashed crucial winners to fashion one of the most significant wins in his career.

In contrast,India No. 2 Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu sailed through with a straight-sets win over CCI-Western India semi-finalist Karan Malik.

It was a day of upsets and close encounters as Akanksha Salunkhe of Goa continued her winning spree with a sensational 11-4,11-6,11-7 win over second seed Jui Kalgutkar of Bombay Gymkhana to advance to the girls under-15 semi-finals. Salunkhe later entered the under-13 semi-finals to complete a fruitful day.

Another top junior from Goa Yash Fadte also registered a thrilling 6-11,11-4,11-13,11-7,11-7 win over formidable Shlok Makhija after enduring a gruelling third set and trailing 1-2,to enter the boys’ under-11 semi-finals.

The talent from Tamil Nadu also came to the fore as Adithya Raghavan,S Velavan,Sandeep Ramachandran,Mayuri N,Ashita Bhengra and Neharika Balamurgan progressed to the semi-finals in their respective categories.
