Kin of ex-cop dupe him off over Rs 24 lakh, use his phone’s UPI apps to transfer money

A FORMER Police Sub Inspector was duped off over Rs 24 lakh after his relatives stole the SIM card from his mobile phone and used UPI apps to transfer money to a friend’s account. The transactions took place over four months, following which the retired cop, Bajrang Vanjari, registered an FIR with Tilak Nagar police station on Thursday. So far, no arrests have been made in the case.

As per Vanjari’s complaint, he was staying in Chembur with his family comprising his wife and three children. He said his sister-in-law Sangeeta Bokare, her son Saurav and daughter-in-law Vaishnavi would frequent his residence.

He said he had helped Sangeeta financially for Saurav’s eye treatment he had been undergoing at an ophthalmologist in Colaba. During the treatment, Sangeeta and his wife would frequent his house and would stay for a month or two.

Vanjari said Saurav would observe his movements closely and that the complainant often gave his mobile phone to his six-year-old son to play games. He added that his phone had PayTM, PhonePe and other online banking accounts linked to his police pension account.

Vanjari said when he went to his bank on May 29, he found that Saurav and his wife had taken his mobile phone from his son. They had also asked him about passwords his father used. They then transferred over Rs 16 lakh using UPI and internet banking methods on his phone to their own accounts as well as those of friends.

He further alleged in his complaint that on April 17, the duo had taken his phone, stolen his SIM and transferred another Rs seven lakh to their friend’s account. He said thhat he took a few months to find out the details and then approached the police station to register a complaint.

Senior inspector of Tilak Nagar police station Deepak Bagul said that they have registered an FIR in the matter. “So far, no arrests have been made. Based on the probe, we will take further course of action.”
