The Agripada police on Tuesday arrested the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli, Shivnanda Lavande, for allegedly taking money from a Latur native while promising to get his son admission in the hospital’s institute.
The police said that the complainant, Rajendra Maddewad wanted to get his son admitted to the MBBS course and he, along with a friend from Mumbai, approached Lavande last month for the same.
“On January 17 this year, Lavande took Rs 23.13 lakh from Maddewad and promised admission for his son. From then, Maddewad kept contacting her repeatedly, asking about the status of the admission, but Lavande kept warding him off. Finally, Maddewad suspected he was being cheated and approached the Agripada police on Monday,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni.

Dr Suhasini Nagda, director of medical education and tertiary hospitals in the BMC, said, “I did not know such a thing had transpired. We will look into it.” The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Chandrakant Pawar, refused to comment.
