After the attack on the Karachi airbase, security for the two IPL playoffs to be held at the Wankhede Stadium has been beefed up,almost to the same levels deployed for the ICC World Cup.

“We have set up a special security cover over Wankhede for the matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the teams’ practice sessions in the wake of yesterday’s attack on Pakistan’s military airbase where terrorists fired indiscriminately and also bombed the base,” said Cherring Dorje,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I). Security is being tightened owing to the potential terror threat to Mumbai,he said.

Apart from the Mumbai Police, teams of National Security Guard,State Reserve Police Force and Quick Response Team will maintain strict vigil at the stadium where Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore will play against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday.

“A crowd of over 30,000 is expected on each day of the matches. The spectators will be thoroughly scanned using metal detectors before they enter the venue. Apart from this,we will place 20-odd snipers on top of highrises around the stadium,” said Dorje.

Over 180 CCTVs have been installed by the Wankhede authorities inside and outside the stadium and a special police control room has been set up to keep a watch on spectators. The bomb detection/disposal squad will also be positioned at the stadium.

“Besides the stadium, the area around it will also be secured. There will be no entry for cars from lanes D and F,which will be closed. Special parking spots will be assigned for spectators’ vehicles to avoid chaos,” added the DCP.
