Minor fire at BMC building

A minor fire broke out at the head office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Fort on Thursday afternoon. Malfunction in one of the air-conditioners on the sixth floor of the new building caused a spark which led to the fire,a fire official said. The fire was controlled before it could spread and no major loss of property was reported. Fire officials refused to comment on what caused the short circuit and said a probe was on.

Diamonds worth Rs 2 crore robbed

Three unidentified men on Thursday robbed diamonds worth Rs 2 crore from Vile Parle based-courier company employees on the western expressway. According to the police,Ashok Couriers owner Dilip Vyas and employee Sanjay Soni were on their way to the office after receiving a consignment from the airport. The two were traveling in an autorickshaw when a motorcycle with three men intercepted them and took away the consignment at gunpoint. Vyas told the Vile Parle police that he suspects the hand of an insider in the crime.

‘Sensitise BEST and taxi drivers on traffic rules’

The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the state government to bring together representatives of BEST,taxi and autorickshaw unions along with their zonal sub-committees to sensitise them about traffic rules. Government Pleader DA Nalavade informed the court that the traffic police,the BMC,the transport commissioner and the Home Department had come together for synchronising the collection of data.

WR admits to accidents on tracks

Replying to a PIL filed by activist Sameer Zaveri,the Western Railway on Thursday admitted before the court that there are instances of rail accidents and the question is how to reduce them. The court was told that building footover bridges or underground subways at old suburban stations was difficult owing to space constraints. However,it was being done at all the new stations in Navi Mumbai. Amicus curie Jamshed Mistry,however,said that earlier orders of the HC have not been complied with by the railway authorities.
