(Representational/File photo)High tidal waves are likely to hit the shores of Mumbai in the next 36 hours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warned on Saturday, appealing to citizens to avoid visiting the seashore till Sunday night.
According to the BMC, tidal waves rising to a height of 0.5-1.5 meters will hit the shores of Mumbai from 11.30 am on Saturday till 11.30 pm on Sunday. The BMC said it has been alerted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Institute for Oceanography (NIO) on the same.
Civic officials said that as a precautionary measure, lifeguards and marshals have been deployed in multiple locations adjoining the seafront to prevent people from entering the sea.
“In several low-lying areas, residents have been asked to temporarily relocate for the next 36 hours. Alternate means of accommodation have been arranged temporarily in municipal schools and community halls,” a civic official said.
Civic officials said that members from the fisherfolk community have been approached to ensure that their boats and vessels are harboured within a safe distance from the rocky shores to prevent collision and damage.
