Harmony Silver Awards announced

Announcing the Harmony Silver Awards 2010 on Tuesday,Harmony for Silvers Foundation chairperson Tina Ambani said the winners were not just proof of the power of elderly people.

Announcing the Harmony Silver Awards 2010 on Tuesday,Harmony for Silvers Foundation chairperson Tina Ambani said the winners were not just proof of the power of elderly people,but “of ordinary people who show us all how we have the ability to improve the lives of all those around us. Let us remind the country of its obligation to the generation.”

Founded in 2004,Harmony for Silvers Foundation,an NGO,is “working to enhance the quality of life of the elderly in India”.

The awards will be given at a ceremony on Wednesday at the Kokilaben Dirubhai Ambani Hospital. Actor Jeetendra will be the guest of honour at the function. On Tuesday,the NGO announced 10 winners,who will receive cash prizes and certificates.

Professor Annaswamy Ranganath Rao,103,will receive the award for his creative approach in making complicated mathematics theorems and equations easily understandable through the use of innovative games and puzzles. Ram Sanehi,80,is awarded for “rescuing sex workers” in Madhya Pradesh and Sekhar Raghavan,62,for inventing eco-friendly toilets which reduce the risk of groundwater contamination.

Dr Dilip Shrinivas Velaskar,69,from Mumbai will be honoured for his development of a “stroke-prediction kit”,which he says has the ability to prevent and diagnose heart attacks and strokes before they happen. Apart from simply being recognised for their exceptional work,the foundation also gives elderly a mouthpiece to communicate with the rest of society.
