Despite an increase in precautions this year,the city saw a fair share of injuries in the Janmashtami celebrations on Monday. Amid the fervour,about 205 persons were injured in trying to reach the dahi handi. Two govindas suffered serious injuries and are in the ICU of Agrawal and Bhagwati hospitals. Of the total injured,172 were treated and discharged from hospitals,whereas 33 are still in hospitals.
Like most years,this year too,KEM Hospital admitted the maximum number of injured govindas . There were 100 people who came to KEM Hospital for minor injuries. Eight persons have been admitted to the hospital mostly for broken bones or slight head injuries, said an official from the BMC disaster management cell. There were three persons each admitted in Sion,Nair and Cooper hospitals. V N Desai,GT,Rajawadi,Bhagawati and Bhabha hospitals also admitted some people,mostly for head or shoulder injuries.
After the death of two persons last year in the dahi handi celebrations,hospitals were geared to treat injuries this year. KEM had reserved 20 beds to treat the injured and doctors were also present at the site of the dahi handi pyramids to provide immediate help.
Last year,as many as 170 persons were injured in the celebrations. This year,the BMC made medical aid free to all the injured as most of them belong to economically weak backgrounds.
