Aerial dancer Shruti Jasani was suspended on a silk rope at Parel’s Sitara Studio. Behind her, a bunch of first-timers were getting ready to follow her moves. Jasani was in the middle of a practice session last week for “Airplay”, a two-day aerial acrobatics, adventure and dance workshop, which will be held on May 17 and 18 at the studio. Among the activities to be held, don’t miss the workshop on capoeria, a martial art technique that was developed by the African slaves in Brazil over 500 years ago; artificial bouldering, an extreme sport which essentially is rock climbing without ropes; slackline, an activity similar to rope walking; and Kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art form.
Divided in two sessions per day, the activities will allow participants to perform stunts such as multiple flips, ballerina spins and literally fly mid-air using just ropes and harness. Organised by Natura, an adventure service provider, Dancers Alliance and Sitara Studio, the festival is open to all, and encourages children to join in.
