One can never go wrong with candles, crackers and chocolates.
Nachiket Barve, fashion designer
If I could give one thing to my loved ones, it would be some spare time. Since that’s not possible, I would gift a beautiful candle. I believe in a noise-free Diwali that can be enjoyed by everybody, including pets. A candle is the best way to celebrate the spirit of the festival of lights. Another option would be lanterns that are sold by charity organisations. It’s a great way of helping someone out.

I receive a lot of crockery, like glasses. It’s a sweet gesture, but those gifts end up in the rotation cycle. This year, I’m giving my friends pastel-coloured brick chocolates in flavours such as caramel, oreo, praline — they taste amazing. Everyone likes to indulge on Diwali, so these chocolates are perfect.

Everyone is so busy partying and socialising that they forget about the little joys. Apart from chocolates, I gift my friends crackers , like sparklers, since these are what make Diwali special. I particularly like those tiny bombs that burst upon throwing on the ground.

Instead of conventional options, I’m sending all my friends letters this year, asking them to donate to charity. I’ll be sending them vouchers for an NGO such as the Smile Foundation. They can decide the amount they wish to donate; it works like a gift registry system. It’s a small gesture that can bring a smile on many people’s faces.
