(File Photo)THE MUMBAI crime branch busted a fake call centre allegedly operating from Royal Palms in Goregaon and arrested seven persons for duping Canadian citizens. As per police, the accused duped people by pretending to make calls under the guise of being representatives from Amazon and the Canadian attorney general’s office.
Unit IX of the Mumbai crime branch received a tip off that an alleged fake call centre was operating under the name Zoho Tech Solution from Royal Palms in Aarey Colony area of Goregaon. The police conducted a raid and detained seven persons.
An officer said that based on an investigation, it came to light that the callers had contacted US citizens through internet calls. The accused callers would first call them up claiming to be from Amazon, telling them that a gift parcel they ordered had narcotic substances in it even as the person denied having ordered anything. The callers would then again call these same people pretending to be from the Canadian Attorney General’s office.
They would them claim that the victim’s account had been misused for criminal activities and their money was not safe in their account. Given the victims would have received a call from Amazon earlier, they would believe this call, an officer said.
The fraudsters would then send them a QR code for their Bitcoin wallet address through the Text Now app and ask them to transfer the money there for it to be safe. Once the victims transferred the money, the accused disconnected the call and the victim would realize they had lost their money.
The crime branch team arrested seven persons and are on the lookout for three others. They were produced before a local court and remanded to police custody. The police suspect the call centre has been operating since the past two months.
