Sarvankar was lodged at Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai when he started showing symptoms of GBS.

“Sarvankar was admitted to a hospital in Navi Mumbai for three days and shifted to the J J Hospital on September 4. His family had made repeated requests to the prison authorities to allow them to shift him to a private hospital but it seems they did not realise the seriousness of the ailment,” said Sarvankar’s lawyer Girish Kulkarni.

GBS is an acute polyneuropathy disorder that attacks the nervous system. J J Hospital dean Dr T P Lahane said,“He was on ventilator. GBS paralyses the legs and hands. Sarvankar was paralysed from the neck downwards.”

“His condition did not improve and his body stopped responding to treatment,” added Lahane.
