Sore over reports of MNS corporator Girish Dhanurkar allegedly beating up a junior engineer Thursday, the Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) has said engineers would not respond to summons by corporators in future.
The MEA has written to BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte seeking protection through an Act similar to the Doctors Protection Act,which makes assault on doctors a non-bailable offence.
Corporators often summon civic officials and dictate terms. This goes against the norms set by the civic body. The role and duties of an engineer is set by the executive wing and corporators cannot assign tasks to civic officials, said MEA secretary Sukdev Kashid.
A nominated corporator,Dhanurkar allegedly beat up engineer Rajesh Rathod for not responding to repeated complaints about a temporary shed that was illegally constructed. Rathod suffered ear and hip injuries and is recuperating at Sion Hospital.
Dhanurkar was reportedly miffed after Rathod allegedly snubbed him over the phone in the past 15 days leading to the incident, with regard to an unauthorised shed built in front of the MNS party office in Dadar.
The four arrested suspects Dhanurkar and MNS party workers Santosh Vitthal Shivtarkar,Amit Ramesh Patil and Ulhas Ghanshyam Sawant were produced in court Friday and were released on bail.
We had asked for police custody as we wanted to identify the two remaining accused in the case and conducted an identification parade. They were granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000 each. They should present themselves at Dadar police station every Monday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
