A 31-year-old electrician was arrested by the Dahisar police on Tuesday evening for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a knife and then injuring himself at a guesthouse.

A 31-year-old electrician was arrested by the Dahisar police on Tuesday evening for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a knife and then injuring himself at a guesthouse. Vaman Sawant and his girlfriend Sapna Pillai (26) were staying in room number 4 of the Sanmaan Guest House in Dahisar (East) when a fight broke out between them.

According to the Dahisar police,in a fit of rage,Sawant first attacked Pillai and then injured himself.

The police officers investigating the case said Pillai worked at Silent Bar in Borivali and was having an affair with Sawant for the past few months. Sawant, who is already married, used to go to the bar where he met Pillai. “Sawant used to drop Pillai to her Mira Road residence daily. The two also used to meet at guesthouses in the locality,” said Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police (Dahisar division).

“Recently,Sawant had learnt that Pillai had another affair. To make her quit her job,Sawant offered her Rs 3 lakh to buy a house and marry him. On Tuesday around 1 pm,the couple met at the Sanmaan Guest House to discuss the matter. When Pillai refused to quit her job,a fight broke out between the duo,” added Deshmukh. Around 2.45 pm,a waiter heard noises of a scuffle and saw Pillai lying injured on the bed while Sawant hid in the bathroom. He alerted the guest house management, who rushed the couple to the Bhagwati Hospital, said the police.

“The woman had suffered injuries on her stomach, elbows and hands as she had tried to resist the attack, while Sawant suffered injuries on his stomach. The two were later shifted to the Nair Hospital,” added Deshmukh.

The police have arrested Sawant for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, and attempt to commit suicide. “We will present Sawant before the court as soon as he is discharged from the hospital,” Deshmukh said.
