Drunken driving: 55 drivers get simple imprisonment

In yet another crackdown on drunken driving,officials from the Mumbai Traffic Police department arrested 80 drivers on July 17 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In yet another crackdown on drunken driving,officials from the Mumbai Traffic Police department arrested 80 drivers on July 17 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Of the 80,55 drivers were punished with simple imprisonment from one to five days. Twenty-eight drivers who had been caught for drunken driving did not appear in court and summons or warrants have been issued against their names.

Of the drivers who were produced in court,25 cases were adjourned for a next date. Licences of 47 of those arrested were suspended for six months by the magistrate,whereas the licence of one driver was suspended for a year.

“This year,so far,a total of 5,609 drivers have been awarded simple imprisonment for various durations for driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol and a total of 5,141 licences have been suspended for drunken driving offences. The number of traffic offences of drunken driving recorded this year till July 18 is 8,334,” said DCP Shahaji Solunkhe (Traffic HQ).

The number of cases of drunken driving registered in the year 2007 was 11,416 whereas 16,680 cases of drunken driving were registered in the year 2008.

Another traffic police said requesting anonymity,“Our operations have shown that a majority of drunken driving offences occur during the weekends and we have formed our campaign keeping this in mind.”

He added,“Also,most of the vehicles involved in drunken driving are two-wheelers and drivers are mostly aged between the 25 and 35 years.”
