Drugs seized,2 held

The Matunga police on Thursday arrested two Jalgaon residents for allegedly carrying around 60 kg of ganja worth Rs 3 lakh in the domestic market from Asiad bus stop near Dadar TT.

The Matunga police on Thursday arrested two Jalgaon residents for allegedly carrying around 60 kg of ganja worth Rs 3 lakh in the domestic market from Asiad bus stop near Dadar TT. Police said the duo, identified as Naseeruddin Tadvi (21) and Roshan Tadvi (30),had carried the narcotic substance in four rucksacks all the way from Jalgaon to Mumbai.

Senior police inspector Sunil Deshmukh said,“Initial enquiries revealed that the two men had been contracted to smuggle the contraband into the city and hand it over to a woman. Based on a tipoff,we laid a trap and arrested them when they alighted from a bus in the afternoon. The drugs were recovered and they were placed under arrest.”

The duo had apparently been contacted by traffickers in their hometown and promised a payment on successfully delivering the drugs to the contact. They had taken a mail train from Jalgaon for Nasik and then boarded a bus. They have been booked under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. “We are conducting further enquiries to find whom the deliveries were meant for and whether any other people were involved in the gang.”

Officers from the Worli anti-narcotics cell had,a few days ago, seized two vehicles and arrested a driver on charges of smuggling narcotics in the city. They had recovered 6.5 kg charas worth Rs 5.2 lakh in the domestic market from the vehicles. Interestingly, the smugglers had concealed the contraband in hollowed-out CNG cylinders in order to escape detection.
