The Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against websites IndicTales and HinduPost and a Twitter account, BharadwajSpeaks, for publishing and “spreading false and malicious” content against Kratijyoti Savitribai Phule, thereby hurting the sentiments and creating enmity between different communities.
A senior IPS officer confirmed that the FIR has been registered at the Azad Maidan police station and police have booked the accused operator of the said websites and Twitter handle under sections 500, 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Earlier during the day, a delegation of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by MLA and leader of opposition Ajit Pawar, met Mumbai police commissioner on Wednesday demanding action against the website for allegedly posting defamatory article about social reformer Savitribai Phule, after which Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered a probe into the matter.
Within an hour of their visit to the CP’s office, Shinde directed Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik to investigate the matter and submit a report, saying any insult of personalities such as Phule will not be tolerated.
“Despite the directive from the Chief Minister, the article has not been removed,” said NCP state president Jayant Patil, after the party’s review meeting of 11 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. A similar meeting was held on Tuesday.
The party has maintained that these meetings are merely to understand the ground situation and no final decision has been taken.
