HC reprieve for Haveliwala

The Bombay High Court on Friday quashed an order of the FRRO restraining Nooriya Haveliwala, accused in a case of drunken driving and hit-and-run that killed two in January 2010,from travelling beyond Mahim. Haveliwala had got bail in the case on April 1,2010 and the FRRO order came on April 12,2010,apprehending that she might evade trial. Her lawyer told the court that she had been abiding by the conditions imposed on her and she, being a beautician, needed to travel in the city for her work. Justices BH Marlapalle and UD Salvi noted that the lower court had given her permission to travel abroad.

‘Record statement of rape victim’

Responding to a criminal writ petition filed in a case of rape of a 14-year-old,the High Court directed the Mumbai police to have the victim’s statement recorded by a lady police officer. The police said they will record it by Saturday morning. The victim’s mother had filed a petition, demanding registration of a case against the accused and action against cops who allegedly refused to register her complaint. Her affidavit stated that the officers had threatened her after she filed the petition on June 10. The case is being heard by a division bench of Justices B H Marlapalle and U D Salvi and the next hearing is on June 22.
