The police have banned paragliding within the city limits for the next 15 days following intelligence inputs suggesting that terror groups have bought paragliding equipment to launch aerial attacks.
There is nothing to fear. These are just preventive measures that a force takes to be on the safe side to ensure that there are no untoward incidents, Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan said.
The entire force will be on the streets on Republic Day,with no leaves granted.
As paragliding takes place at heights lower than those for other flying activities, radars may not detect and pre-empt such attacks. Paragliders using motors can travel reasonable distances, officials added.
The police today have issued proper circulars to adventure sports groups banning all paragliding for the next 15 days. A prohibitive order to that effect has been passed, said Himanshu Roy,joint commissioner of Police (law and order).
The police have also identified certain high rises to ensure that the terraces remain locked,an additional measure to ensure that paragliders cannot take off or land there.
The coastal front, and every other access point is being monitored and security measures adopted, Sivanandhan said.
Dummy terrorists fail
Of 60 commandos in the role of dummy terrorists who, armed with AK-47s,tried to enter the city from the sea last week,42 were intercepted before they could reach their dummy targets. The remaining 18 did not land on the citys shores either. The commandos had been picked from the police, the Coast Guard and the Navy as part of a 36-hour Sagar Kavach operation.
