A middle-aged constable was allegedly stabbed by two sugarcane vendors after they were asked not to throw garbage on the road. The accused,who are brothers,fled the scene but one of them was nabbed by the police later.
The incident occurred on Saturday night in Vasai when head constable Ramesh Kadam (52),who was in plainclothes,reprimanded the sugarcane vendors Chandan Babulal Chaurasia (18) and Deepak Babulal Chaurasia (22) for throwing garbage on the road. The brothers got into an argument with Kadam. Unaware of Kadams identity,the duo assaulted him with a chopper and fled the scene, said Deepak Deoraj,deputy superintendent of police,Vasai division.
According to police officials,Kadam sustained stab wounds on his head,chest,shoulders,legs and abdomen and was rushed to the Golden Park Hospital located nearby.
He was bleeding profusely and had lost a lot of blood when he reached the hospital. Since he was a diabetic,treating him was even more difficult. However,his condition was stabilized after blood transfusion. He was also operated for his injuries on intestine, said Dr Malcolm Pestonji,a surgeon of the Golden Park Hospital. Though Kadams condition is stable,he is still kept under observation.
Superintendent of Police Madhukar Pandey said that Kadam was a resident of Mahavir Mahal at Sai Nagar in Vasai and was posted at the Naigaum police headquarters.
We have arrested Chandan and are on the lookout for his brother. Both of them have been booked for attempt to murder and assault, said Pandey.
According to the police,the duo had consumed alcohol from a nearby shop and was in an inebriated condition when the incident took place
