John Matthew Mathan plans a Sarfarosh sequel

Soon after the release of his next project,A Love Issshtory in June, director John Matthew Mathan plans to begin work on a couple of films. These include a sequel to Sarfarosh, nearly 10 years after the film’s release to widespread acclaim in 1999. The 48-year-old director had debuted with the Aamir Khan-Naseeruddin Shah-starrer then.

It isn’t very often that Mathan opens up to the media. But on the eve of inaugurating the UTV World Movies’ festival Global Kaleidoscope at the Xavier Institute of Communications, the filmmaker spoke about his future plans in the industry.

“I’m still etching out the characters of Sarfarosh 2. Unlike the first one, which was a political thriller, the sequel will be a spy thriller. But

I intend to approach Aamir to play ACP Rathod’s character again,” Mathan confirmed.

Mathan released his second film Shikhar,an Ajay Devgan-Shahid Kapoor-starrer,in 2005,after nearly a six-year hiatus. Unfortunately the film tanked at the box office. Mathan believes that much of it had to do with the lack of a good marketing plan. “Of the many issues involved, the biggest was that our budget constraints didn’t allow us to market the film well.”

However, the director moved on and is now busy with the post-production work of A Love Issshtory, starring Himesh Reshammiya. “Himesh first approached me to remake Karzzzz but I didn’t want to do it. I had a couple of scripts ready of which he liked A Love Issshtory the most, which is a romantic comedy.”
