Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Wednesday that networking major CISCO is conducting a pilot study on CCTV installation in Mumbai.
Within days of the triple blasts in July,CISCO had made a presentation to the CM regarding the facilities they can provide and the work they had done in other states and countries. CISCO shared best practices in video surveillance for cities like Mumbai based on its experience from similar projects in India and across the world.
Chavan said CISCO had been given the order to conduct a pilot study on the project. CISCO is conducting a pilot study about the CCTV project in Mumbai. It will not be enough to instal cameras,we need cameras which can pan and zoom to a specific degree. We also need to get specific information from the cameras to be relayed to the police control room, said Chavan.
Chavan said the crucial part of the project was establishing a network of the cameras. CISCO has been asked to show how this network can be laid, he said.
The state government is planning to instal latest CCTV cameras which have at least 180 degree rotation and higher zooming. The data for some months will be stored and there will also be digital storing of data for later reference.
Soon after the July blasts,a pending proposal to instal 5,000 CCTV cameras at vital spots in the city was revived. The state government has received 10 bids for the expression of interest issued for the project.
A team of senior police officers will travel to London next week to interact with the Scotland Yard to check a similar CCTV camera network, which monitors major stations and routes.
