Central Railway recovers Rs 87 Lakh worth stolen, illegally held railway property in 2024-25

Nagpur Division came second with ₹33.07 lakh recoveries through 84 cases and 243 arrests. Pune had 71 cases, arrested 159 persons, and recovered property for ₹18.91 lakh.

The Central Railway (CR) has recovered more than Rs 87 lakh worth of stolen or illegally held railway property in the financial year 2024–25, official figures made public by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have shown. The recovery is part of an overall enforcement action under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act to address theft and protect railway property.

The Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966, deals with the unlawful possession of railway property. It provides penalties for theft, dishonest misappropriation, and other related crimes. The Act also empowers the RPF to arrest without a warrant and search and seize property. The Act also gives the RPF the authority to act against theft, misappropriation, and unauthorized possession of railway property.

A total of 430 cases were reported in the year, and 974 persons were arrested in these cases. As a comparison, 534 cases were reported during 2023–24 and 1,272 offenders were arrested, which shows a decrease in the number of cases this year.

“With fewer cases reported this year, the high recovery amount indicates that there are more targeted operations being conducted,” said a CR spokesperson. Division-wise, Mumbai had the maximum number of cases and recoveries with 179 cases and 345 arrests leading to the recovery of ₹23.79 lakh worth of property.

Nagpur Division came second with ₹33.07 lakh recoveries through 84 cases and 243 arrests. Pune had 71 cases, arrested 159 persons, and recovered property for ₹18.91 lakh. Bhusawal and Solapur divisions recovered ₹7.42 lakh and ₹4.20 lakh respectively. According to sources, the thefts generally includes bulbs and tube lights, fans, fan covers, signal cables, scrap or metal objects used for track maintenance and sometimes parts of tracks.
