(File photo)The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday arrested the manager of a private bank for allegedly facilitating opening of mule accounts which were used for cyber fraud.
According to the agency, the accused allegedly accepted illegal gratification and by misusing his official position had provided the account opening forms to the cyber fraudsters.
The accused was identified as Nitesh Rai, who was the manager of a branch of Axis Bank.
During investigation, the official found that these accounts were actively used in multiple cyber crimes, including cases of digital arrest frauds. Once the involvement of Rai was found during the probe, the agency said, a case was registered against him under the relevant sections of the BNS along with the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The bank manager was produced before a court here, which remanded him in the CBI’s custody for further interrogation.
Another person who allegedly paid the money to Rai have also been named in the FIR as an accused for offering bribes to the public servant.
Both the accused had already been arrested by the CBI in connection with the investigation in an ongoing digital arrest case.
According to the CBI, the evidence collected during the probe indicated a wider pattern of syndicate of cyber crime networks using the banking systems.
The cyber criminals offer money to bank employees to help them in opening mule accounts, in which the money obtained from cyber fraud is deposited and later withdrawn, said CBI officials.
