Mumbai’s Veermata Jijabai Technology Institute (VJTI) will offer full-time PhD fellowships of Rs 35,000 a month from the 2024-25 academic year, in a move that the government-funded engineering college hopes will help it increase its research output and gain university status.

With a few days to go for the academic year to start, VJTI has released its PhD admission guide. The institute has for the first time announced its own research fellowships for two students each from nine branches of engineering and two research projects. This is besides the regular PhD programmes.

The new programme will be called PhD Full Time (Under Institute Fellowship with Teaching Assistantship-cum Scholarship). Under this, the institute will provide teaching assistantship-cum-scholarships of Rs 35,000 per month to two students per department.

Dr Sachin Kore, director of the institute, said, “In a bid to increase our research output, a proposal to start the institute’s own research fellowship programme was presented to the Board of Governors, which has promptly approved it. Increased research output will help us with our future plans, apart from levelling up on the ranking scale, which requires an educational institution to have considerable research output.”

The institute will follow a dedicated selection process for the fellowships. Additionally, two students each will be selected for research projects in textile engineering and artificial intelligence.

“This is possible as we have already received grants for the two projects from the government. The Government of India has given a grant of Rs 10 crore for the textile engineering department under the National Technical Textile Mission and the Government of Maharashtra has given a grant of Rs 5 crore for the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence,” said Dr Kore.

Information related to eligibility criteria, the admission procedure and entrance tests is available on the institute’s website.
