Bribery: 2 civic officials arrested

“We had received a complaint against these officials from a person who supplies vehicles to the BMC. He had told us that the officials had asked him to give them three per cent of the amount charged in all bills that he gave to the civic body or they would not clear them. The complainant was told that his bills for October would not be cleared if he did not give three per cent commission,” an ACB officer said.

With the bill amount running into lakhs,the complainant registered a complaint against the officials with the ACB. “The bill for October was Rs 27.33 lakh. He was told that he would have to pay them Rs 82,000 as bribe and that his bills would then be cleared,” the officer said.

After probing the allegations,the officers found that Shaikh had asked the complainant for the money. “Initial investigations revealed that Shaikh and Khan had demanded the money from the complainant ,” said the officer. A trap was then laid. “We caught Shaikh red-handed while he was accepting the bribe. We also trapped Khan as he was equally responsible for the same. Further investigations are on,” the officer said.
