The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday sought suggestions and objections from more than 100 architects and urban planners for landscaping and gardening work of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP).

Civic officials said currently, more than 70% of the civil work for the MCRP has been completed and they will start the landscaping work soon.

The civic body is constructing the 10.58-km MCRP by reclaiming 111 hectares of the Arabian Sea. According to the BMC’s blueprint for the project, it aims to create open spaces adjoining the road for city residents.

On Wednesday, the BMC held an interactive session with several architects and urban planners in Mumbai.

“Now that the majority of civil work is completed, we have taken up landscaping work. Therefore, we have sought suggestions from architects to gain a broader view about designing open spaces along the road,” said Mantayya Swamy, chief engineer of the project.

Alan Abraham, one of the architects who attended the event, said the primary objective behind his presentation was to make the spaces accessible and open to the public. “These spaces should be open for all, free to use and must have a legislative reservation on them so that they are not used for any commercial or construction activity in the future. Also, the open spaces should be used for coastal and tidal resilience, considering Mumbai is a coastal city,” said Abraham.
