… but its own corporators disagree
While the BMC claims it has repaired 1,316 of the 1,392 roads where potholes were found over the past month, its own corporators claimed otherwise. In the general body meeting on Tuesday, corporators slammed the civic administration for the poor condition of roads in the suburbs. The BMC,however, said only 76 minor and major roads need to be repaired.
Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar said considering the pattern of rainfall,it is not possible to achieve pothole-free roads. At any point of time, potholes will be there on asphalt roads. Most of the roads have been built without proper design study and quality control, he said, adding that henceforth roads will be constructed after consultation from experts, such as IIT-Bombay,which will guide them about the design of the road in relation to its topography,load-bearing capacity, etc.
Rs 26 crore of the Rs 40 crore meant for pothole repairs during monsoons has been spent. About Rs 109 crore was spent on repairing potholes last year. Why do citizens have a bumpy ride when the cost incurred on repairing roads has only risen? asked Congress MLA and corporator Rajhans Singh.
Shiv Sena corporator Sunil Prabhu said: Only some of the major roads have bad stretches, but most of the smaller ones are severely potholed.
