The Mumbai unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official on Wednesday for allegedly demanding bribe from a family to allow them to repair their collapsed roof. The accused is a rent collecting officer from the BMCs M Ward. The accused,Kiran Bodas, was allegedly caught red-handed by ACB officers while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.
ACB officers said Bodas had asked for a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a family, which resided in the vicinity,to allow them to continue their roof repairing work. The house is jointly owned by a married couple and the woman is the main complainant, said officers.
The family lives near the office. The roof had collapsed and the family was planning to repair it. They started work on the roof when a person came there and introduced himself as a BMC officer. He asked them if they had taken the requisite permission and asked them to meet Bodas, his superior, said an ACB officer.
The complainant went to meet Bodas in his M Ward office. He told her she had broken a rule and he could not allow her to continue work on the roof. He told her the only way she could continue the repair work was if she paid him Rs 10,000. The woman said she could not afford it, said the officer. Bodas reportedly asked her to pay him Rs 5,000 instead.
The woman approached us and registered a complaint against Bodas. We laid a trap at the M Ward office on Wednesday and caught Bodas red-handed accepting the money from her. Further investigations are on, said the officer.
