The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday lodged a complaint against an unknown person for illegally damaging as many as 13 trees adjoining the western railway compound at Prabhadevi (Senapati Bapat Marg). Civic officials said that all the trees that were damaged were of indigenous nature and comprised species like Karanj, Tamhan, Shevar, and Tabeia.
The officials maintained that the trees were pruned from the top while their branches were also cut.
“The damage was noticed during a routine inspection that was carried out. We found out that the branches were cut from the topside and there were signs that the tree was poisoned as well. Following this we have registered a complaint with the local police station,” said the official.
Civic officials said that the trees were at least a decade old and the complaints that were filed in sections 8 and 21 of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) protection and preservation of trees act, 1975.
“It’s most likely that the trees were cut to improve visibility for a hoarding. We have collected details of billboard operators that are active in the adjoining area and have furnished the information to the local police station as well,” said the official.
