Backstage drama

At the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week (LFW),it’s easy to spot the backstage area. Other than that it has heavy set bouncers blocking the way for outsiders (read guests and unaccredited individuals),it has one distinguishing quality — it’s the place where everyone’s in a tearing hurry (no pun intended).

Even though makeup and hair sessions for the models start a good two hours in advance, minutes before a show is to begin, the frenzy reaches a climax of sorts. The cue sheet is whipped out,the makeup and hair are retouched, falling drapes are set right and accessories are added or removed, depending on what the stylist feels is right. Double entries for models mean their individual assistants have to step in and help the models slip in and out of clothes before you can say the word ‘change’.

In another corner,a common sight is that of a helper ironing out wrinkles from an outfit for the next show.

And yet all, this chaos has a beauty of its own. The best part is that though the air is thick with a certain pre-show anxiety their faces say otherwise.

For the models,it’s an anxiety they have made peace with. Contrary to the stereotype, friendly banter, and not tantrums, dominates the models’ conversation. “Fashion shows, undoubtedly, are taxing but we have learnt to make the most of it. We have our share of fun,” says Candice Pinto,a Mumbai-based model.
