Deputy superintendent of police Ashok Dhawle, alleged to be at the centre of a drug syndicate in Mumbai, demanded double cost price of the drugs he delivered as commission, police sources said on Thursday. If the consignment was worth Rs 15 lakh,Dhawle demanded Rs 30 lakh for it, said an officer from the Crime Branch on condition of anonymity.
Dhawle was arrested on Tuesday with 1.5 kg of heroin worth Rs 1.5 crore in the international market while he was on his way to deliver the drugs to a woman peddler along with accomplice Amar Singh in his police vehicle.
According to Crime Branch and Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) officers,Dhawle demanded double the price of the consignment since heroin is rarely available in the city and thus costs more. The fact that Dhawle was transporting the consignment in a police vehicle proves he was confident enough and had done this before. We needed Dhawles custody to trace the property he bought with the commission money and the syndicate he was working for, said the officer.
However, the police officers investigating the case are having a tough time interrogating Dhawle as he knows the tactics of questioning and is revealing very little information about the consignment. We have to use all the tactics we know to get Dhawle to say something. He has revealed very little and we are tying our best to get him to say anything at all as he has been in custody only for two days, said the officer.
While trapping Dhawle also we had to be very careful as he was aware of how the police function. We wanted to catch him red-handed with the drugs, he added.
On Wednesday,Dhawle was remanded in police custody for 14 days. His accomplice identified as Singh was also arrested under Section 29 of the NDPS Act and has been remanded in police custody till March 9.
