Andheri pool to reopen today

Almost a year after Andheri’s civic-run swimming pool was shut, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to re-open it for the public.

Almost a year after Andheri’s civic-run swimming pool was shut, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to re-open it for the public. The civic administration had shut the swimming pool last March following the drowning of a seven-year-old in the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex swimming pool.

On Thursday,Mayor Shraddha Jadhav announced that the “repair works in the swimming pool have been completed and the pool is expected to be open from Friday”. “While one of the pools in the Andheri sports complex will be thrown open for the public soon, the other diving pool will remain shut,” said a senior official of BMC. The Andheri complex has two pools,of which one is an olympic standard pool and the other a diving pool where repair work is still incomplete.

While the Mayor has claimed that the pool will be open soon, she was non-committal about the opening date of the much-awaited Shivaji Park pool. “It is sad to have infrastructure for swimming pools and yet delay its opening. The repair work needs to be completed and the pools should be opened for public use at the earliest,” she added.
