Air pollution: Bombay HC’s 10 interim directions to authorities at a glance

With Diwali round the corner, the Bombay High Court Monday passed interim directions for the Maharashtra government and authorities in Mumbai and surrounding areas to mitigate the issue of worsening air pollution. Here are the 10 directions from the court:
📌 Time limit to burst firecrackers in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is between 7 pm and 10 pm till the Diwali festival. The state government to abide by the undertaking given to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about complying with directions related to the bursting of firecrackers.
📌 Covered trucks to be used for carrying materials to and from construction sites and no carrying of construction debris till Friday, November 10. The High Court warned that if the air quality does not substantially improve by then, it may consider passing a total ban on the transportation of construction material till Diwali.
📌 Strict implementation of air pollution mitigation plan announced by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in March 2023. Assistant Municipal Commissioners of every ward are to be personally liable and accountable in case of any lapse in implementation.
📌 Similar action plans to be followed in the rest of the municipal corporations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
📌 BMC and other municipal corporations should ensure metal sheets of sufficient height are constructed to see that dust is suppressed and contained within project sites.
📌 Municipal Corporations to ensure regular and continuous water sprinkling by project proponents or agencies.
📌 Storage piles at construction sites to be properly covered and cleared as per state government guidelines.
📌 No burning of waste including municipal solid waste in open areas including dumping sites.
📌 Traffic department and transport officers to ensure emission norms are complied with in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.
📌 State government, civic bodies, and educational institutes in the MMR to immediately take appropriate steps to spread awareness of ill effects of burning/bursting of firecrackers to existing polluted environment.
