After ‘harassment’ complaint, 22 dental students allowed to write exam from another college

The authorities said that a provisional arrangement has been made so that the students do not miss their exams.

Twenty-Two Bachelor of Dental Study (BDS) students of Aditya Dental College, Beed, have been temporarily transferred to another dental college in Aurangabad so that they can appear for their exam. These students had complained of sexual harassment and other problems at the Beed  college.

The authorities said that a provisional arrangement has been made so that the students do not miss their  exams.

Dr S S Rajderkar, pro-vice-chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), said, “They have been provisionally transferred to the Aurangabad college for theory, internal assessment and practical exams. We will never let the students suffer.”

Of the 22 students, mostly girls, 13 are first-year students, seven in the second year and two in their third year.

These students had been fighting to get a transfer from the Beed college for almost a year and had also moved the Bombay High Court against the college management.

On April 30, the (MUHS), Nashik, published a circular on its website listing the names of the 22 students and their new centre – Chhtrapati Shahu Maharaj Shikshan Santha’s (CSMSS) Dental College at Aurangabad, from where they can appear their exam.

Students had alleged that the college did not have any lecturer for physiology and biochemistry, both considered major subjects, and that the institute lacked laboratory and other facilities. They had also said that practicals for anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and dental histology were not held till the date of the complaint. Further, the girl students had alleged that they were locked in a room and starved, threatened, mentally tortured and humiliated on several occasions.

Maseera Fodkar, a second-year BDS student and one of the complainants, said, “It is a relief that after fighting for almost a year, we have got a transfer to another college. We will also be able to appear for our exam now.”

Another student said, “Our exams are beginning from May 27. Once it is over, I will look for an internship. After all the chaos that took place last year, I thought I will never be able to appear for the exam anytime soon.”
