A Reminder through Art

If you are looking for a weekend getaway, a visit to Pune during its Biennale is not a bad option.

It might not be as big in scale as the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, or be taken as seriously by the art world, but if you are looking for a weekend out of the city, a visit to Pune during its Biennale is not a bad option. An initiative of Bharati Vidyapeeth, supported by Pune Municipal Corporation, the event, in its second edition, will be held over 10 days starting February 6.

The theme of this year’s public art extravaganza is “Heritage – Yours and Mine”, and will be held across heritage sites, galleries, and public places. Kiran Shinde, executive director of the festival says, “Pune recently signed up to be part of the Indian city heritage network. Until now, policy support was missing, but with this development we hope heritage will be looked at in a closer way. Also, people talk about Pune being a growing city, but in the process, a lot of them are forgetting its past. These were the two main reasons for choosing the theme.”

The festival will be held across the city, and will comprise five exhibitions, over 30 site-specific installations, 25 large-scale sculptures made from junk, as well as art-appreciation talks on various aspects of heritage. These include a piece by Gauri Kadam, who has created a river using detergent and soap wrappers — a comment on the pollution of Pune’s rivers — and also a panel discussion between TC Chang, a prominent architect from Singapore and Pradeep Sachdeva, the man behind the design of Delhi Haat. While most of the artists are up-and-coming names, the Biennale will include works by other prominent artists, including Mumbai-based Bose Krisnamachari.
