The accused were produced before court and remanded in police custody.
Three persons have been arrested by the Agripada police early on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting two men and sexually assaulting two women including a 15-year-old girl and forcing them to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ at Byculla area in Mumbai.
A senior police official from the police station confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of robbery, assault and outraging the modesty of a woman of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children under Sexual Offences Act.
The police said that the incident took place at around 1.30am on Wednesday.
The three accused identified as Anuj Maekar, Umesh Parab and Hritik Rathod were aleegedly under the influence of alcohol, when they walked up to a tempo driver.
“He was sleeping inside the tempo, when the three allegedly forced him to step outside the vehicle, assaulted him and stole his mobile phone,” said an investigator.
They even forced him to say ‘Jai Shree Ram’, said an officer.
Subsequently, the three accused went to a man, who was walking on the road and allegedly assaulted him.
As they could not find anything on him, they assaulted him and forced him to say Jai Shree Ram,” said an officer.
“On seeing that a man was being assaulted, two women including a 15-year-old stepped in between to protect the man during which the three brutally assaulted them as well,” said an officer.
The police control room was later informed following which the three accused were taken to the police station.
“We then registered a case on the complaint of the tempo driver after which the three persons were arrested,” said an officer.
The accused were produced before court and remanded in police custody.
