MOHAMMED Mushtaq Musa Tarani, sentenced to life imprisonment by Supreme Court in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case, moved the vacation bench of Bombay High Court on Tuesday seeking parole.
Tarani has sought parole to attend his daughters wedding in the first week of June, said his lawyer Farhana Shah. Parole can range between one month and three months. However, its duration will be decided by the court if parole is granted,Shah added.
In March, the Supreme Court had commuted the death sentence handed out to Tarani to life imprisonment.
The trial court had held Tarani guilty under section 3 (3) of TADA (P) Act for attending a conspiracy meeting called by Tiger Memon at hotel Taj Mahal in Mumbai and surveying places targeted for blasts.
CBL had said Tarani had attended a conspiracy meeting at the hotel where co-accused Tiger Memon,Javed Chikna and Mohammed Usman Jan Khan plotted the blasts.
Tarani also allegedly planted an RDX-laden bag in hotel Centaur,Juhu, that exploded injuring three persons,CBI had said.
SC had reduced Taranis punishment from death sentence to life imprisonment observing that he came from the lower economic strata and had fallen prey to the ulterior motives of conspirators wanting to spread terror. Tarani, who is lodged at Yerawada central prison,Pune, has been in custody for the past 20 years,Shah said. A vacation bench of Justices A H Joshi and M L Tahaliyani is likely to hear Taranis plea Wednesday.
