147 booked for drunken driving

The Mumbai Traffic Police booked 147 people for drunken driving in the last weekend. Of them,56 appeared before the special metropolitan magistrates on Monday. The court adjourned the hearing of 88 such cases till next date and issued warrant against three people for not appearing before it for hearing.

“Of the 147 apprehended,107 were riding two wheelers. Rest of them were driving cars,tempos,trucks and three wheelers,” said a traffic police officer. As per the records,a majority of the drunk drivers were in the age group of 26-30.

“From the beginning of the year till date,we have registered 277 cases of drunken driving. Among them,198 people were sentenced to simple imprisonment and around 178 licences have been suspended so far,” said the traffic police officer.
