(Representational Image) The Marine Drive police on Sunday booked 11 persons, including food vendors appointed at Wankhede stadium, during the England South Africa match for misusing identity cards issued to them. The said cards were used to ferry people inside the stadium.
Police said that such incidents pose major security risks during the World Cup matches and as they committed the crime for financial gains, they have been booked for duping the government and ICC administration.
According to police, the case was registered under relevant sections of cheating and cheating by impersonation after the incident came to light during the World Cup match between England and South Africa.
Senior police inspector Nilesh Bagul of Marine Drive police station said, “No one has been arrested in the case as of yet. We allowed them to go after serving them notices. Our investigation is underway.”
Another officer said, “A vendor was appointed to sell food items during the World Cup matches in Wankhede stadium. And the people working under those vendors were issued identity cards to have access inside the stadium, after due police verification. These passes were however misused and given to other individuals to facilitate their entry into the stadium.”
