The president of the unemployed linesmen association,Tirmool Singh was released today and then taken to Chandigarh to meet the chief minister to discuss the associations pending demands. As per the union members, the chief minister has assured them that their demands will be met after September 23. A few other members are likely to be released on Friday.
Despite the move from the state government, however, union members once again staged a dharna near the bus stand and burnt effigies with even the heavy rain not acting as a deterrent. Dharampal, one of the members said, We have submitted our forms since January 14 and till date,no merit list has been made ready while as per the advertisement,5000 linesmen are to be recruited.
The merit list was to be made on the basis of the marks obtained by applicants in the technical course for linesmen. As per the union members, this list was to be out within a month but nothing has been done till now. The members had staged several other protests as well in the past as well. Dharampal added, It is really strange that after beating us with lathis now government itself is giving bail to release our workers. This shows their double standards. We are demanding jobs as per the advertisement conditions and it is our right. The dharna continued for more than an hour with the linesmen saying they would decide the future course of action after September 23.
