Session on bariatric surgery held

CME was conducted in Machiwara by Indian Medical Association,Machiwara Chapter on Bariatric Surgery and its role in treating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

A Continuous Medical Education (CME) was conducted in Machiwara by Indian Medical Association,Machiwara Chapter on Bariatric Surgery and its role in treating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr Ashish Ahuja,Bariatric (Obesity) Surgeon and Dr Sandeep Kundra (Assistant Professor of of Anaesthesia) participated in the CME which was credited by Punjab Medical Council. During the CME,Dr Ahuja said 85 percent of co-morbid medical conditions like diabetes mellitus type 2,blood pressure,sleep disorders,migraine in obese individuals with a high body mass index were cured after performing bariatric surgery. Since it is a specialised branch Dr Sunil Katyal (Professor and Head of Anaesthesia) said more and more awareness amongst doctors has to be created because a common man can only benefit if the concept of bariatric surgery is clear amongst the medical practitioners. During the talk,Dr Ahuja said that in India in the year 2010,the number of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus was 50.8 million,expected the rise to 87 million by 2030.
