PAU mela ground becomes runway of poll activity

The mela ground of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is much in demand these days. With rallies and political leaders thronging the city, this is the only ground where the choppers ferrying the VVIPs can land.

In such a scenario, the ground is on premium demand. Mayawati led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had a taste of this recently. The party wanted to book the ground for their Behnji’s landing which is scheduled for April 28. A request was sent to the PAU. It has been learnt

that the university officials had refused the booking

till the payment for the landing was made. And rightly so,the party which was banking heavily on the charisma of their Behnji made the required payments and only then the ground has been allocated to them for the landing.

Dr D S Dhillon, officiating Director Extension,Punjab Agricultural University, said,“We have a very clear-cut policy. For any kind of private landing, the university charges Rs 2000 per landing as the fee. Cutting across party lines,we charge this payment. The BSP workers had come to us with an application which has been cleared after the payment was made.”

It has been learnt that the university charged Congress candidate Manish Tewari and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for their private visits. “Only people on an official visit are not required to make this payment. And why should the university not charge for this as this is the only place in the city where a chopper can land. Moreover, for the university this has become a source of income. The university should charge more as Rs 2,000 per landing is very nominal,” added another official on the condition of anonymity.

Earlier, the ground of the Government College for Women was used for this purpose. However, with too many overhead wires criss-crossing the ground, the landing there was considered unsafe.
