Man posing as cop held

Police said the accused,Jagtar Singh of Amritsar,would extort unmarried couples in parks after claiming to be the reader to Ludhiana ADCP Nilambari Jagdale. He was nabbed from Nehru Rose Garden while in police uniform

Ludhiana police on Thursday arrested thirty-year-old Jagtar Singh alais Monu,a resident of Guru Nanak Pura in Amritsar, for allegedly posing as an assistant sub-inspector(ASI) and extorting money from couples sitting in parks.

Police said that Monu would introduce himself as ASI Satnam Singh,the reader to Ludhiana ADCP Nilambari Jagdale,before making rounds around parch in search of couples.

“We arrested him from Nehru Rose Garden where he was in police uniform and was harassing the couples. He would tell the couples that he had been appointed to keep a watch on those who create nuisance in the parks and other public places,” ASI Parveen Randev of CIA staff said.

According to police,Monu would threaten to implicate the couples in criminal cases and inform their parents if they did not part with their mobile phones,money and even gold chains.

So far,police have recovered two gold chains,a ring and 6 mobile phones from Monu’s possession. He had allegedly taken them from unmarried couples in the parks.

Police said that he had extorted Rs 2,000 from a Karabara girl last week,who had come to Rakh Bagh with her friend. The girl then lodged a complaint with the police prompting them to investigate the case. The ASI said that the accused possesses a criminal record. He has been facing trial in rape,burglary and drug peddling. He had managed to flee from police custody in Amritsar around three weeks ago.
