Doctors of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have successfully in removing a kidney affected with cancer through the laparoscopic technique. The team was led by Dr. Arvind Goyal, assistant professor of urology.
The other members of the surgical team included Dr Atul Mishra, consultant surgeon, and Dr Gurmeet Singh. Anaesthesia support was given by Dr Katyal and Dr Namrata. A radical nephrectomy was done to remove the cancerous kidney from the body.
Dr Arvind Goyal, who has been a visiting fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center,New York,USA,said,During the surgery the abdomen is filled with carbon dioxide gas to lift the abdominal wall and provide a better view of the kidney. The surgeon makes 3 to 5 small incisions (cuts) where a laparoscope and special tools are inserted. A laparoscope is a long metal tube with a light and tiny video camera on the end. This gives the surgeon a clear view of the abdominal area while watching the images on a screen. The special instruments are passed into the abdomen. The blood vessels are then tied or cut and then the affected kidney is removed. An adrenal gland and surrounding tissue may also be removed.
The surgeon checks the surrounding areas for cancer or other problems. The kidney may either be removed as one whole piece through a new incision on the abdomen or may also be cut into smaller pieces and removed through the previous incisions. The incisions were then closed with stitches and covered with a bandage.
