About half a dozen party workers were injured as two groups led by senior Congress leaders got engaged in a free-for-all clash at the Perfect Marriage Palace in the city on Saturday afternoon. The clash between former Minister Malkiat Singh Birmi and District Congress Committee (DCC) president Jagmohan Sharma took place at a thanksgiving party organised to celebrate the victory of Manish Tewari as the Ludhiana MP.
One seriously injured Congress worker Manpreet Singh Laddi has been admitted to the CMC Hospital while others have been admitted to the Civil Hospital. The injured include Amarjit Singh,Mukesh Kumar and Sunil Sharma besides others.
According to sources,the pandemonium broke out around 3.30 pm. Sources said in the clash both Birmi and Jagmohan Sharma were also seen scuffling with each other.Later speaking to Newsline,Sharma said Birmi along with his supporters had attacked him as he (Birmi) became jealous after seeing his (Sharma’s) array of supporters. Sharma alleged that Birmi had attacked his workers with a sword. Besides,he said that Birmi’s supporters were carrying baseball bats and sticks.Repeated attempts to contact Birmi proved futile as he was not taking the call.Senior police officers including SP City I Harsh Bansal,SP City II Harjinder Singh Sandhu and area DSP Harmohan Singh had reached the spot to investigate the matter. No FIR has been registered till the filing of this report.
