CIPHET starts training programme for inmates

Taking a fresh initiative,the Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET),a premier institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research,in association with Ludhiana Central Jail today started a unique training programme in food processing for prisoners. The aim of the programme was to enable inmates to earn respectful livelihood after they complete their sentence.

Inaugurating the training programme in Ludhiana Central Jail,CIPHET Director Dr R.T Patil said that CIPHET had developed a number of technologies in food processing which could help jail inmates in setting up their own commercially viable units. He said they would provide all technical help and training programme was aimed at creating awareness among them. He named technologies of green chilli powder production and groundnut milk production for setting up of such units.

On the occasion,Dr D.N Yadav,Senior Scientist,gave practical demonstration for making milk from groundnuts. He revealed that production of milk from groundnut was highly economically viable as more than 8 kg of milk could be produced from just 1 kg of groundnuts. He also revealed about process of making cheese from groundnuts,technology of which was first time standardized by CIPHET,Ludhiana. Dr Deepak Raj Rai,Head of Transfer Technology,also encouraged the inmates to get maximum benefits of technologies developed by CIPHET.

Dr Nilesh,a scientist,said that training programme in food processing would be carried out throughout the year and prisoners would be made aware about various technologies. The prisons took keen interest in technologies and asked related questions to scientists. The training programme would include technologies of processing of groundnut milk and curd,tomato puree manufacturing,ginger and onion powder production,preservation of fruits and vegetables through dehyderation etc.
