From now on,charitable institutions will come under the purview of the Right To Information (RTI) Act following a decision taken by the the State Information Commission of Punjab in this connection. Now,all such information will have to be provided within 15 days of one moves an RTI application.
The decision comes after a year of struggle by RTI activists Ajit Singh and Harmanjit Singh under the banner of RTI activists Federation.
Last year, the duo had sought information under the Act regarding details of the source of income and expenditure of the famous charitable organisation Dream and Beauty Charitable Trust. The organisation has grown very fast in the last few years. So,we wanted to know the details. But we were denied information because they did not come under the purview of the RTI Act. Finally,we approached the State Information Commission, said Singh.
At present, the organisation runs a mid-day meal programme for the poor children at a rate of Rs 1. It also provides medical services at Karma hospital and runs education as well as livelihood progrrame at Samrala Chowk. The body has also come up with a lavish senior citizen home built on 19 acres land in Doraha.
Their cause is genuine but there is no harm in providing details about financial transactions. Not only the donor will benefit but the scope of the charity will also increase manifold, said Singh.
