City student tops PhD entrance test
Saurabh Kumar of SCD Government College has topped the PhD entrance test (Hindi) conducted by the Punjab University. The test was held on August 22,but the results were declared late Wednesday. Kumar said he scored 61 per cent marks in the test and would pursue the course in his own college. Two other students of the college,Pritu Tripathi and Kanchan,also cleared the examination and secured the third and ninth ranks,respectively.

Teachers awarded
Ten teachers from different schools were given the best teachers award on the second day of Koshish,an intra institutional cultural festival at PCTE. The teachers were selected through survey,in which first year students nominated the best teacher they came across till 10+ 2. For 2010,the teachers who were awarded included Amrik Singh Nagra from Baba Isher Singh Senior Secondary Public School; Bimla Devi from Government Senior Secondary School,Hasanpur; Kuldeep Kaur from Government Senior Secondary School,Threke; Parminder Singh Toor from Shaheed CHS Government Senior Secondary School,Dakha; Vandana Sharma from GNPS Mullanpur,Kawaljit Singh from Guru Nanak Dev Engg College,Deepika Nathewiel from St Thomas Senior Secondary School,Ramandeep Kaur from Tagore Public School,Ludhiana; Balwinder Kaur from Government Senior Secondary School,Hasanpur,Ludhiana; Rashpal Singh from Swami Ganga Giri Janta Girls College.

Hotel association unhappy
Hotel and restaurant association have expressed concern over some of the clauses in the proposed hotel policy. According to the policy,every hotel need to be registered with the tourism authority said general secretary of the association Amarvir Singh. He said the same policy cannot be implemented for all hotels as the each one cater to different sections of the society. The policy further proposes that hotels need to be of specified size— 120 sq feet for single room and 140 sq feet for a double room. Singh said old hotels cannot change their specifications now,however,it can be implemented on the new hotels. A three-member committee from the hotel industry will discuss the matter with principal secretary of tourism next week.
